Storytelling with Servos

May 2, 2021 by ryan4

Join Jorvon Moss, Jasmine Florentine and Ryan Jenkins for a playful workshop to explore storytelling with servo motors. We love building friendly, ticklish, and whimsical robots, while experimenting with the connections between art, science and technology.

In this two-hour workshop, you’ll get an introduction to using the BBC micro:bit, servo motors and block-based coding language. Each of the session leaders will showcase examples of how they tell stories with robots. Then we’ll start playing with MakeCode and create a simple program that can be used as the basis for further explorations.

In the workshop, you’ll get the chance to build your own designs with support from facilitators, ask questions and share ideas with the group.  We’ll also have a behind-the-scenes tour of the Jorvon’s workshop and get to see some inspirational examples of wearable companion bots that make use of unusual and familiar materials.

Who It’s For:

  • Beginners (no experience working with these technologies is required)
  • Families (children 8+ up recommended)
  • Artists
  • Makers
  • Educators

Schedule

  • Live demos of Jorvon, Jasmine, and Ryan’s robots
  • Introduction to the micro:bit & using servos
  • Breakout rooms: Building time, with guidance from facilitators
  • Virtual Tour of Jorvon’s Workspace/Robots
  • Sharing Our Own Projects

Robot-Building Class for Kids – Sparkle Spectacle

March 30, 2021 by leigh

Brooklyn Robot Foundry offers amazing online robot-making classes that kids just love!  These classes introduce fundamental engineering and technology concepts to children in an age-appropriate manner. But the focus is really the hands-on fun, as children get to build and customize their own robot each class. Children will gain the skills and confidence that allows their inner maker to come out and shine!

During this class we’ll each be making a Sparkle Spectacle, a fun light-up robot that will make for awesome light shows!

All you’ll need is a screwdriver and some basic crafting supplies – the Robot Foundry will send you all of the rest! Each class will be limited to 6 students, to allow for plenty of individualized instruction.  Classes run approximately run 60 minutes.

Robot Mini Golf with CodeJoy

November 25, 2020 by kelsey

Elby the Robot has been playing the same mini golf course for years and has yet to get a golf ball into a hole. It turns out that this mini golf course is not entirely playable. Help Elby by reprogramming the mini golf obstacles to give him a shot at scoring a hole in one.

Join the CodeJoy classroom to learn the basics of coding and explore motors and LEDs. A computer or Chromebook is required for you to interact with our in-studio robots. No experience with coding or other robotics tools are required – this is a fully virtual, interactive experience!
