Storytelling with Servos

May 2, 2021 by ryan4

Join Jorvon Moss, Jasmine Florentine and Ryan Jenkins for a playful workshop to explore storytelling with servo motors. We love building friendly, ticklish, and whimsical robots, while experimenting with the connections between art, science and technology.

In this two-hour workshop, you’ll get an introduction to using the BBC micro:bit, servo motors and block-based coding language. Each of the session leaders will showcase examples of how they tell stories with robots. Then we’ll start playing with MakeCode and create a simple program that can be used as the basis for further explorations.

In the workshop, you’ll get the chance to build your own designs with support from facilitators, ask questions and share ideas with the group.  We’ll also have a behind-the-scenes tour of the Jorvon’s workshop and get to see some inspirational examples of wearable companion bots that make use of unusual and familiar materials.

Who It’s For:

  • Beginners (no experience working with these technologies is required)
  • Families (children 8+ up recommended)
  • Artists
  • Makers
  • Educators

Schedule

  • Live demos of Jorvon, Jasmine, and Ryan’s robots
  • Introduction to the micro:bit & using servos
  • Breakout rooms: Building time, with guidance from facilitators
  • Virtual Tour of Jorvon’s Workspace/Robots
  • Sharing Our Own Projects

Making LED VHS Lamps

May 1, 2021 by theerrantstitch

Dig out those dusty old VHS tapes from your basement and learn how to make your own cool piece of functional retro decor and a unique gift that’s great to give for any occasion!  In this class, you will learn to repurpose a VHS tape into an LED lamp that fits perfectly in your living room, game room, office or on your nightstand!  Make your very own piece of 90s kitsch from the comfort of your own home!

Electronic Waste (“E-Waste”) is becoming more and more of a problem as our technology advances and we throw away all of the old stuff our new gadgets replace.  According to Earth 911, the United States makes more “E-Waste” than any other country in the world.  We throw away 9.4 million tons of electronics every year.  Every repurposing project you do keeps a little bit of this waste out of landfills.  This course is a great way to learn sustainability and how to make cool gifts for yourself or others at the same time!  Be the envy of the room when you show off this totally awesome lamp!

Weave a Geometric Bracelet

April 23, 2021 by popi

We will make a beautiful geometric bracelet that is woven on a portable loom.

This class will be hosted over two sessions. During the first session, we will show you how to warp a loom and how to read the pattern and start beading the bracelet. You will continue working on your bracelet until we meet the following week to finish off the bracelet by weaving in the threads, adding a clasp and jump rings.

A separate kit can be purchased through our Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/967447791/diy-geometric-meander-loom-beading-kit. The kit includes everything you need (except loom and pliers) to weave a finished bracelet – needle, thread, instructions, beads, clasp and jump rings. You also have the option to add on a portable loom for an additional $10 at Etsy checkout.
