What You'll Do:

Dig out those dusty old VHS tapes from your basement and learn how to make your own cool piece of functional retro decor and a unique gift that’s great to give for any occasion!  In this class, you will learn to repurpose a VHS tape into an LED lamp that fits perfectly in your living room, game room, office or on your nightstand!  Make your very own piece of 90s kitsch from the comfort of your own home!

Electronic Waste (“E-Waste”) is becoming more and more of a problem as our technology advances and we throw away all of the old stuff our new gadgets replace.  According to Earth 911, the United States makes more “E-Waste” than any other country in the world.  We throw away 9.4 million tons of electronics every year.  Every repurposing project you do keeps a little bit of this waste out of landfills.  This course is a great way to learn sustainability and how to make cool gifts for yourself or others at the same time!  Be the envy of the room when you show off this totally awesome lamp!

Skill Level:

Ability to use screwdriver, bend thin wiring. No electrical/soldering knowledge required.

Skills you will learn:

You'll learn how to working with micro LED lighting and basic tool use. Most of all, you'll learn how to recycle/repurpose/reuse, and be thrifty and sustainable in your decor.

What You'll Need:

Kits are not required, but are helpful in case participants have trouble finding VHS tapes or small Philips head screwdrivers.    Kits are available with all materials for an additional $15.  Amazon shopping list link also provided for screwdriver and LED lights. Materials Needed: -1 VHS tape -1 set of 20 LED string lights (also called "rice lights") -High quality packing tape -Small Philips head screwdriver   NOTE:  A standard size Philips screwdriver will not fit in the VHS tape screws.  You must use a small, skinny Phillips screwdriver.  They usually come in repair kits on Amazon. -Scissors

About the Facilitator:

I am a longtime crafter and tinkerer experimenting with projects using all different kinds of materials, and specializing in recycling and repurposing items into new, functional objects.  I am also a committee member of Buffalo Mini Maker Faire and a longtime Maker Faire participant.  I have displayed Cassette-Cycle in several Maker Faires across New York State since 2016, including Empire State Maker Faire, World Maker Faire in NYC, Rochester Maker Faire, Buffalo Mini Maker Faire and Fredonia Mini Maker Faire.

Cassette-Cycle is also featured in Make: Magazine, Volume 76, and has also been recently featured on Make: Project email campaigns.

I have taught classes at Maker Faire in the art of recycling and repurposing; in 2018 I taught a workshop at World Maker Faire on making Cassette Tape Tote Bags.  I also teach craft classes locally during the summer.

I will be providing a "take home" document for attendees, documenting the project steps in simple language and photos so that they can follow along with my video and make it again outside of class.
